In 1866 the rare Grey Phalarope invaded English shores in some numbers.
Of those reaching Sussex, 250 were promptly shot.
Four generations later, a solitary Grey Phalarope appeared on the boating lagoon at Hove, where-upon the children shared their sandwiches with it.
